It's been this way since God was a corporal. My series 1 AU clunked all day and night and they told me the same thing then. It works like this, up till 50,000 klms Ford HAVE to fix it in house no matter how much you want to take it to a diff specialist. The dealer's hands are tied. After 50,000 klm, and assuming it is still under warranty, you can take it yourself to a diff specialist, get it repaired and Ford will pay for it. I've had 3 service managers tell me this so I'm assuming it's true.
If you take it to a diff shop pre 50K, you will have to pay. I know my diff has a slight backlash problem but at this stage I can live with it and consider it a "feature". Come 50k though, I will be camped outside a diff shop the night before so I'm the first one in the door.
