Re: GT First Service - Check your oil all every week

Its a well known fact that using fully synthetic oils in ANY new or rebuilt engines will be detrimental to the engines life. My experience with various motorcycles proves this. Full synthetic high-performance oils are becoming so "slippery" that it won't allow piston rings to "wear in". The longer you use the fully synthetic oils in the engines, the worse the oil consumption issues will be. As soon as the cars are delivered with mineral oils, you'll find the problem will fade away. Yes even safeway oil is ok because you shouldnt be driving the vehicle hard during the running in period. same as any engine, keep load on it driving at varied speeds and conditions. ie dont just drive around the block, go for a coast run as well!

Also note, as engine break-in progresses, the engine should get progressively stronger eg faster!!

Ok Boss GT....

There is nothing wrong with running 20w- 50 grade of oil.....This oil is thicker and denser at the molecular level thus making it much more heat resistent and a harder wearing oil than say a typical blend of man made synthetic which is generally good quality.....but is way way too thin at the molecular level ....put it in lamens terms.....spill 10ml of say mobil 1 on the road and time it for evaporation ....then get a blend of 20w-50 and time it..........the 20w-50 will last 20 times longer.....Take it from a race perpective.....most of the engine builders....the highly experienced one's when they run in an engine typically for race using a 7 litre sump ( not a dry sump ) usually put in 5 litres of 20 w 50 and 2 litres of gearbox oil.....40w 80.etc.....synthetic has it's good points and bad points like anything else in the real world .....just ....never believe what you see on tv.....and one last thing....listen to SBUTLER.....he knows his sh*t so don't argue with him.

Do what most engineers do when running in a car or bike the right oil and weigh down the car by 300kg's or more...5 or 6 bags of 60kg concrete mix......makes the car work a lot harder at all engine revs because of the added weight.........or a bike double around using someone very heavy.....and quote XR8 is also right....

Rob recommended Shell Helix to me. It's what he uses.

And for the record, Castrol GTX3 is a 15W40 oil. If you use cheaper mineral oils, they still work well provided you change the oil regularly. That's the key - regular servicing.

at 2300 km i had to add 1.5 litres of mobil 1 which is what is specified on the oil cap, not cheap at $20.00 litre.
then by the time of the 3000 service it was getting a bit low...
the dealer (service manager) said not to worry it was not a problem but to keep an eye on it.
so far at 4100 it hasn't moved from full at the dealer service.
it did get a good run in with variable load & revs for the first 1700 k's and then a couple of laps around Qld raceway at 2000 k's.
It gets a good run whenever i can - (not much anymore minus 6 points)just ask the cop that nearly had me at 160 kph - thank the lord for the Brembos
