Have just reread the MOTOR magazine PCOTY issue I have come up with a cunning plan.
It involves our nice friends at FPV taking a bog standard XR6, XR6T, XR8 and GT up to Avalon and doing the speed run. The only 'minor' mod would be to remove the speed limiter.
This will settle once and for all the FPV/HSV arguments.
According to MOTOR a CV8 did 270 km/h and a GTS did 276 km/h.
In a controlled environment under Ford engineers and with professional drivers the true figures will be shown.
This has good and bad sides. The bad being that some nutcase will try and duplicate it and smear him/herself all over the road but then they probably will anyway (Darwin's Law)
The good side is that the hypothetical argument ends.

Dont expect to much from the XR6 Turbo as we where at Eastern creek prepping the car for targa on thursday and once you get above 190kmh its much like driving a stock XT in engine wise. There is nearly no boost at all once at those speeds.The times at avalon was because the straight was so long it had time to slowley stretch its legs.

Mate - a small mod to the boost controller (or adding one, can't remember) stops the boost from dropping off as the revs rise. Means you get 6psi all the way to the top. My mates XR6t has just had this done. Good for 270kw now.

Why does it really matter who has the best top speed?

You can never use it.

I would rather have the better performance car, then the fastest car.

If I bought a GT, and it was limited to 200, it wouldn't worry me, because I would never drive at that speed.

id actually be a little supprised if the ford engineers hadnt already done a few speed runs in them during testing but its not the sort of info that you would really get to hear about.
