Mal Wood Clutch after 3 weeks

Redhawk pm'd me yesterday regarding a Mal Wood critique. So here is my estimate so far. No problems at all, less driveline shunt (don't know how or why) beautiful smooth takeup and a little more leg muscle needed to change gear. I havn't really had much time to give it a good workout so yesterday arvo I went to my quiet private road and did this.

10 successive hard clutch dumping off the line starts: result, bloody fast acceleration and no hint of slip or pedal feel change . The car would slip after 3 similar shots on the FMC job.

THEN

10 successive foot flat acceleration runs from 80 kph in second and up to just pre rev limiter rpms about 5800 through 3rd & 4th. Result nothing but screaming past the 220 mark real quick once 5th was selected. Previously with the standard job the second or third run at this would make the clutch pedal go hard or soft or both

This morning driving to work in the traffic, even after yesterdays hiding everything was the same as it had been previously.

In a nutshell, I'm Rapt: If you have a clutch drama ring Mal Woods and then you won't

Re: Mal Wood Clutch after 3 weeks

Yes, I rang Mal Wood and spoke to one of the guys there. The best thing is that the people who answer the phone also do work in the workshop.

I bought a Tremec short shifter and 5th gear set (0.74 ratio) for the TR3650 and told them I would have them fitted by a gearbox specialist here (its along way to Qld) and they invited me to have my gearbox guy phone them when he has the cover off my box because they have some tips they can give him when changing the gears.

They also shared plenty of tips with me regarding known problems for clutch, pressure plate, spiggot bearing, tail shaft and made other recommendations for gearbox & diff oil etc

Now that's service. These guys see what the problems are know how to fix em.

Ford Australia should have a chat with Mal Wood

Re: Mal Wood Clutch after 3 weeks

Great to hear doc, looks like it was worth the money.

I too have had some very informative conversations with Mal and Doug.

They are the best guys to talk to about the Ford drive trains,

Thanks Mal and Co

If they had enlisted his extreme knowledgable input, in regards too drivetrain geometry......Ford would almost have no problems......Great guy to talk too for advice and tells you exactly what you need for the given application. His prices are very good, and you get a product that works. The thing I like the most......their is no BS......he is straight to the point.

Is the Tremec short shifter like the Herrods sure shift kit, or is it simply a shorter stick again? How much for the short shifter?

Better, looks exactly like a standard one, costs about half the price of a Herrod one.

Re: Mal Wood Clutch after 3 weeks

So you get the whole assembly like the Herrod one?

Tremec short shifter and 5th gear set arrived today with invoice and the goods were extremely well packaged.

I was quoted $395 for the shifter, about $190 for the gear set and $12 postage.

The invoice has one price for all the above - $633.64 plus GST = $697.

I notice that after re-reading hypnodocs' post he is not really sure what he paid for the shifter

So the gear set must have been more than $190 but it was not made clear that the prices did not include GST, although one must come to expect that mostly happens anywhere

The shifter does not include the gear lever. Its just the base plate, a nylon spacer/gasket that goes under the base plate, a few inches of stick (that the std stick bolts to) above & below the base plate, and a rubber boot

I also have a B&M short shifter to collect and I know it includes a stick that has a nice S bend in it so I think it could be set up to move the stick closer towards yourself

I will report my findings in a week or so when I've had a chance to compare the two
