Some of the guys up here in the XR club of Qld have started using Castrol formula R (0/40 or 5/30 I think). They say that the castrol oil really quietens down their engine for some sort of reason. I was thinking of giving it a go because the old windsors aren't exactly the quietest in terms of engine rattles and ticks. So, getting to the question, and not knowing too much about oils, is putting Castrol in the car going to make ANY kind of difference or should I just stick to Shell Ultra. I thought that synthetics are synthetics and that they would be pretty much all the same. I know the question is a little confusing but noone ever talks about the old windsors anymore. Interesting to here all the oil problems that the Bosses are having though. My 5.0 litre doesn't use a drop (touch wood). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.
Leon.
HI Snerlo. first of all shell oils are not one of the best oils to put into your pride and joy, But it's a good oil for the wifes shopping trolly. Secondly Castrol oil's arn't much better now that BP own's them. In the latest motor oil test conducted by the MTA, Castrol rated very poorly (third from the bottom if I remember correctly). Fuchs was the winner, and the only oil I will use.

Inregards to your windsor I would stick Fuchs 5/30. The old windsor will love you for it.

Also I am also in the XR club of QLD and have heard all the hype about Castrol. It use to be very good but not any more. Also when you are told that Victor Bray uses castrol and he says it's the best and would not trust anything else in his drag car. Ask yourself what would happern to Victor Bray's 6 figure digit sponsorship from Castrol if he was to say other wise, or say that the oil that he uses is a special blend just for his car. Victor Bray useing of the shelf motor oil.... Bull shit!

Matt

Re: What type of Oil do you use ?

Thanks for that Jabba. I will give it a go for sure. Hope to see you on a club run one of these days. Can't miss my car so come up and say g'day. I've got a venom red AU2 XR8 with Speedy atix rims and a hawk rear wing. By the way, any ideas where to get Fuchs oils from and any idea on price would be appreciated. Thanks.
Leon.

Re your comment on start up rattle. Have you had this looked into yet and had any feedback?, Have any other owners had the same problem?
My GTP has just passed 27k's and the start up rattle is getting worse.

Re: What type of Oil do you use ?

I have an AU 5L V8 and use Mobil 1. This oil has been the best by far for me, seems to stay cleaner for longer (that honey colour).

Other oils seem to blacken faster than this stuff.

Re: What type of Oil do you use ?

i use MOBIL 1 supersyn 5W50, because mineral oils break down rather quickly in the windsor, especially in hot climates. i spoke to rob herrod about some lifter noise at start-up and he reckons the synthetic oils are better for this engine and extended drain intervals are not a problem. i live in adelaide and used Maughan thiem ford while my car was in warranty and they always used mobil 1 synthetic in all tickfords and T-series including fairlanes.

I remember seeing these threads last year and now my 04 XR8 has a nasty start up noise. It happens no more than twice a week but still isnt nice considering only just 70k's on the clock.

Anyone had anyfeedback on this???

That would be timing chain tensioners, they get sticky after a while and make noise on startup. Speak to your dealer they will replace it with a spring type tensioner under warrenty.

Re: What type of Oil do you use ?

I am now using Mobil One. Also, since I have switched at service to Mobil One from a standard oil I have noticed that the Oil Temp goes up and down a lot more and faster, especially driving over 150 or fast accelerating. The engine temp has remained the same and stays fairly cool, even on 42 degree days. Anyone else notice this or have any ideas?

Re: What type of Oil do you use ?

In my GTP I use nothing other than Mobil 1 0W40. If NASCAR use Mobil 1 and dare I say it HRT and Toll HSV use Mobil 1 in full race conditions, then what better oil is there? Gives me a 4.2% fuel economy hit as a bonus..!!
