hello, I just put 2 12in subs in the back of my 2003 expedition. theyre powered by a 1000w kenwood amp. I ran an RCA cable up to the inside of the dash behind the headunit.
Is there any easier way to connect the audio from the amp to the factory head unit?
Would an aftermarket headunit be a better idea?
Will my steering wheel controlls still work after I get the aftermarket head unit?

More expensive HU will work with steering wheel controls, but don't count on it. Your best bet for using your factory stereo and installing RCA is getting an adapter, aka a PIE adapter. These will allow not only RCA, but in some cases iPod connections. Google Ford Pie Adapter, or check out
