Can anyone tell me how to get the original unit out correctly without damaging anything?

You need the original U shaped removal tools.

4 rods eg welding rod correct size for holes will also do the trick, but remember you will need your security code if you disconnect wiring

Take a metal coat hanger cut 2 pieces and bend into u shape to fit spacing of holes, grab a pair of side cutters or just pliers and cut a circular groove right around the circumference of the ends of the wire approx 1-2 mm from the tip, shove in until you feel a little click may need a bit of jiggling but once you have freed the cathes you can get your hand in from the ashtray hole and push out.

you can just buy ford clips at like autozone for 5 dollars. They are more likely to not break off or bend like a coat hanger.
