EA Falcon front door mounted speakers

I know that this topic comes up quite frequently on the forum, but my exact question ( Request for recommendations really ) has yet to be answered.

Currently I have a Pioneer DEH 1550 running a pair of 150w 4way ( coaxial ) Blaupunkt 6x9's

I want some splits for the front doors, now keeping in mind that the ea was blessed ( cursed? ) with 4" speaker holes in the door, what is the best way to go? Should I settle for some 4" splits ( do they make them and do they sound any good? what brand? ) or should I find a way to fit 6" splits instead?
I have been told that 5" splits MAY fit into the 4" hole with a small spacer, which should still clear the door trim.

Has anyone tackled this before? what have you come up with and what works best? how much would an audio place charge to enlarge the holes? I would prefer not to fit EB doors

If you drill the rivets out and take out all but the plastic backing plate, you can fit about 5 inch speakers in the front doors if that helps.

Re: EA Falcon front door mounted speakers

thats the reply i was looking for dellboy999, thanks for that! I will surely look into it, do you think a 6 inch would fit with a thin spacer? AND clear the door trim?

Re: EA Falcon front door mounted speakers

not without cutting the hole really will only hold 5 maybe 5.5 inch speakers at the biggest. Its not so much the size, but height diemensions on the speakers you need to consider, i thinkwith some careful measurements and speaker choice, with a spacer you could get 6" in there.

I have splits for a start, so 2 way or 3 way may stick out to far and hit the speaker grill, just bear that in mind.

Re: EA Falcon front door mounted speakers

i had to cut a tiny bit of metal to fit 5.25" speakers in my ea. the problem with putting a spacer behind the speaker is that a) tweeters hit the door trim in a coaxial setup or b) the speaker excursion can cause the cone to hit the trim. i have recently cut more of the door to fit 6.5" speakers in the factory holes and im very happy with the results.

Re: EA Falcon front door mounted speakers

ah ok galapogos, so going by that do you think it'd be safe to say that I shouldnt have any dramas fitting the 5"s at all? I will be going splits for sure so clearance shouldnt be an issue. Actually that brings me to the next drama, what brand should I go for??

Im wanting a nice clear, crisp sound but also one that copes well with moderate to high volume. Are these "VDO" speakers any good? or should I just grab some pioneers or something?

Re: EA Falcon front door mounted speakers

I cut holes in the bottom back corners of the doors and put 6" in, I've bought 4" speackers to replace the stocko and they dont sound anywhere near as good, I'd go the holes in the doors
