I have an NA with 3.9, Engine has started slight ticking noise, seems to be just under rocker cover in middle, thought it may be timing chain but seems to be further back, plenty of new oil in the engine. It did it a couple of times when it was cold but has now started to do it when warm as well.It is on Gas and has a upper lube kit installed. Also can anyone tell me why my door ajar cluster flashes when I have my Headlights on.
Is it a ticking or sound like a tin full of marbles rattling? As for the for the door ajar flashing, check your headlight\highbeam relays.

If there's commotion coming from the passenger seat, and nothing but earth going round and round outside the windows,.......then everything is not as it seems!
The only time you have too much fuel, is when you're on fire!
Dude i would be guessing its one of your lifters....dont worry, they all do it
An oil change may help, some of that wynns engine conditioner (I cant remember what its called but apparently it quietens your lifters) should help, if not, time for new lifters/yours reconditioned. Repco have a kit, i paid 30 bucks for it (trade) and no more ticking sounds from my car
sicEA,What kit do you mean?I thought that the lifters could not be pulled apart,I had another listen today and definately lifter problem.Repco want $25 a lifter so I will try running thinner oil to see if problem wii fix itself.I think the oil that I am running is to thick for the cold weather in Geelong at the moment,If that does not fix then new lifters will have to go in,checked my manual and does not seem to be a very big job.
rossi, about my door ajar cluster flashing it flashes on low and high what shoul I check with the relay,as the lights still work ok although I think there may be a power drain someplace as some mornings the car Battery seems low on power when turning over some mornings, new battery&alternator 3 months ago.
that sounds exactly like a lifter to me mate. My EF did the same thing, did it when i started it cold, then stopped, then it got worse and started doing it all the time. u might notice a loss in power, and a loud ticking noise all the time if its a lifter. It might have collapsed. I'd take it into your nearest mechanic to get him to look at it.
My mums EL makes the "marbles in a jar" noise at start up...isn;t there when its warm tho...haven't had a look at it 2 see where it's coming from tho. It also makes a quiet, fast ticking noise when i put the accellerator down a bit...if i put it down further it goes away....noise from doing higher RPM's might be blocking it out tho. Any ideas?
Thanks

Fast ticking would be dizzy....as they get older, they make a little more noise when they sparkthan usual....its no dramas....my dads VCT even does it if you listen hard enough.
