Head Unit Mounting

I've just bought a 2nd/hand Blaupunkt CD head unit and tried to install it in my EA I GL. It seems there has been some "smashing" done by a previous installer, as there was no unit there anyway and a couple of the interior mounting brackets and things are broken off. Also, the dash shroud (the main pull off grey thing) has a crack in the top and seems to have been cut out slightly.

The unit i bought only came with a cradle type thing to mount it, and this slides straight through the dash opening and fall down. How should i mount this? do I need brackets or something? Looks like I'll need some sort of mounting hardware, but what?

Does anyone have pics of their install processes? I Tried CAA website, but their tech/tute section is down.

Thanks in advance for any help guys,

Simon

Most stereos nowdays are of the DIN standard, which also covers mounting locations & overall size.

Look for threaded mounting holes in the side of the H/unit. Brackets attach to these, and are then screwed into the factory plastic behind the surround.

If your h/u doesn't have these screw holes, you have 2 choices.
1. Use timber to make up spacers & mounts for the cradle.
2. Obtain some factory brackets, then open up the h/u to establish clearances. Drill through the sides of the H/u and use small nuts & bolts.

I put a pull out Sony unit into an EA using the cradle, mounted to timber, which was bracketed to the plastic.

I recently put a non-DIN h/unit in my mates EB, and we had to drill holes in the side. He still had the factory brackets off the Ford stereo. 2 of the holes in the brackets didn't line up with clear spaces in the H/u, so we sussed out a clear spot & drilled through both the bracket & casing, then put a small nut & bolt through.

Thanks MIXIN'!

Looks like I need some brackets then! I'll try the wreckers, but I might have to make some and re-drill holes in the dash, as it's half wrecked by previous owner...

better idea, go to the wrecker and get the centre concile unit out of that, also ask for the origional brackets on the head unit as u can redrill them to suit ur new head unit, i did this for mine and it fits like a factory one:)
