hey, not really sure if this is the right spot to post this, but here it goes...

so i have an old '99 explorer xls that i bought myself when i got my license almost 2 years ago. i bought it used and it only came with one key. well it kinda broke on me for a bit and my dad needed they key bc he said he would take it to a shop. well, he lost the key, the ONLY one i had. we looked everywhere for it. i've heard that Ford dealerships will cut you a new key if necessary but when i went today they said they couldnt do it bc it was older than 10 years. they asked for the key code and i had no idea what to say.

so my question is, where is the key code located that i can give to the dealership for my new key? i've read that its embedded in the VIN, but i gave them the VIN today and they still said i needed a key code. so can someone please help me out? i really miss having my own car!

They used to put the key code in the owners manual and the owner would take it out. The code isn't imbedded in the VIN. Try another dealer to see if they can help. Otherwise, you'll have to have a lock shop come over and make a key. (And an extra or 2)
