Now that I know where all my speakers are, I would like to replace all of them in the car.
I have an EL with premium audio, and at this stage would like to keep the head units and amp.
I just wanna know if anyone has kept the factory decks and amp, and just changed the speakers, including the sub, and what they installed. I wanna get rid of the distortion and buzzy sound of the existing crap.
I dont want to go cutting holes in places, so the new speakers will have to be factory size.
Hey ARM79 for a start you dont have to cut any holes if you want more sound in the back get some 6 by 9's and go to your local car stereo place and ask for 6 by 9 molds for the rear shelf and tell them you dont want to cut holes ok. and for the front just get some splits because the stockers a 6'' and so are splits ok. and yess get a new amp to run them ok. you can leave your stock head unit but its a pain to hook an amp up but what ever you do GET RID OF THE SUB IN THE BACK SHELF.
I want to try and keep everything looking the way it is. I like it the way the factory does it.
What is wrong with the amp. I figured a 250w Alpine amp would do pretty good.
And why get rid of the sub. I do want to get rid of the factory one and replace it with something better. Or do you mean get rid of it all together.
I am a novice when it comes to car audio. How to install it and hook it up is easy. But how and why to get this and get rid of that i dont really understand.
The best thing you can do is replace all the speakers. The factory speakers are a crappy paper type cone which buzz and distort at the slightest increase in volume. I replaced the speakers in my BA with speakers that screwed straight into the factory mounts and the sound difference was amazing. You can look at amps and subs later if you're still not happy with the sound. I think if you get a decent set of speakers and you dont want a competition level system you'll be happy.
You do NOT need 6x9's to get more "sound". 6x9's will simply give you more bass. Get two DECENT sets of splits, and put them in. By decent, I mean don't buy something because everyone has it and it's popular. Buy something because it is good. I would suggest Bluapunkt if you want high quality, and good bang-for-buck.
If you want Really High performance, think about something like Cerwin Vega or DLS. And as for amps. I can't comment on the factory EL HU, but a new HU will have more than enough power for a set of blaupunkt splits if you dont want it for competition etc. JVC decks have the best power output straight from the HU in my experience.
just do what dk_falconXR6 said i didnt think of that a really good set of slpits will screw right in and will sound MAD. As for the sub i mean get rid of it all together from the rear shelf coz they dont go that good there , they sound to slapy if you know what i mean the amp might be good enough i dont know ive never tryd it have a go there is no harm in trying aye.
When buying 6" speakers for the parcel shelf, make sure that the baskets will fit in the holes and still reach the shelf so you can bolt them in. My new pioneers in the rear did not fit so I made an 12mm MDF ring for each one (cut across the radius of the ring to 'screw' them through the speaker holes, easiest throught the hole for the sub while you have it out). Leave the rings under the carpet, bolt the rings to the car and screw the speakers to the MDF. Except for the differtent grills, it looks factory.
Don't forget that the rear speakers are driven by the amp so you can buy decent ones. The fronts are powered by the head unit and the splits have no factory cross-over.
If I had the premium sound ($4000 + as a ford spare part!!!) I would probably get a 2ch amp for the fronts as the sound seems to boomy from the back (Ihave the mid-series stereo).
hey ARM79
i replaced my back speakers with JVC CS-V622 ,150w they fit right in trouble is only 2way and subby is a KENWOOD KFC-W2005G 4ohm 500w 680gram its only 8 inch so not much problem fitting mind you i have full premium sound system
Splits require a amp, so you can high pass them. If you underpower splits they sound like junk. I recomend getting a nice 4 channel up. Either a coustic or a clarion if your on a budget, and some nice speakers. I have some 6inch splits avaliable on my shop online which sound pretty nice. But there are others out there which cost more and are heaps better, around to 400 to 500 dollar mark.
