Hi just wondering if anyone has any idea on what my problem could be.
I have a 97 EL falcon with a JVC head unit and factory speakers. Recently I turned my car on and the speakers weren't working. The stereo looks like it is working fine but there is just no sound from the speakers, no crackling or anything. I have check all the fuses and they are fine. The only thing that happened that would have any effect on it was there was a little bit of fuel spilt on the speaker wires running to the rear speakers in the boot. It just seemed to make the electrical tape a little sticky but I don't think it got to the wires.

Any help would be great. I have no idea.

What probably happened: dig this: the petrol made the wires' insulation sticky right? That means that it was degrading the insulation--therefore, you've probably got a place where the insulation is damaged and not functioning, where some of the bare wires are touching together, or where bare wires are grounding out on the chassis or frame.

Check it out...remember, even if the insulation is not broken, per se, it can still be damaged enough to not function properly.

Yeah checked out the wires. They don't seem to be bare anywhere, all intact. Someone suggested the amplifier in the head unit might be stuffed and if so, I should throw it away. In any case $80 for someone just to look at it and then possibly more to fix it, I am better off getting a new one anyway.
