You'll have to forgive me for this post - I'm not usually this thick.

When I checked the ignition timing on the above ol' dog it was way advanced. Conferring with the workshop (gregorys) manual suggested that the "spark output spout should be disconnected from the distributor module" to check the timing. What in the hell is the "spark output spout"? I have never heard of anything of that nature - and there's only one connector on the distributor anyway - without which I'm pretty sure it won't run at all - not much use for checking the timing. Any ideas?

THE SPARK OUT SPOUT IS THE GREEN SINGLE WIRE CONNECTOR IN THE WIRING NEXT TO THE DIST BY DIST CONNECTING THIS IT STOP THE COMPUTER FROM ADVANCING THE TIMMING TO ALLOW BASE TIMMING TO BE SET

Ok - I can't see that - but it's dark now so I'll have a look in the AM. I figured it meant something like that - an electronic equivalent of vacuum advance on the traditional distributors.

I've only just got the car (to tow the boat) - I'm used to my Subaru Legacy - electronic everything - no distributor - no adjustment lol.

I'm pretty sure XF's are throttle body injected....not multi-point injected.

The XF EFI system is a Multi point injected one, none of this crappy TBI or CFI whichever you want to call it.

Yeah - they're multipoint - 6 injectors - the proper way to do it but 5 extra things to go wrong. This ones the very last of the XF's - the EA came out in September of the same year.
