Hi

Does anyone know about the above engine fitted to late Sierras and Scorpios? I know a 16V version was fitted to the Escort, but it must have been fitted to other cars.

Yes, mate- Twinks were available in the cars you mention, there was also a carb. version. Power was rated at 105 for the latter, 120 for the EFI version in Sierra. Later Scorpios use a 16V head, and later still a 2.3 16V was released. Both of these were also available in Galaxy.
Like the Escort RS2000 16V, all shared the same block but with mods to the crank etc.

Seems strange Ford created an engine that didn't get put in many different cars, considering they like to use an engine in many vehicles and fr more years than they did with the dohc. I wondered whether they had brought the engine from some one like Mazda or whether it was originally American.

As far as I know, the engine was Ford designed, unlike the Probe engines which were Mazda, also the Fiesta Zetec SE was designed in conjunction with Yamaha.
I forgot to mention the DOHC was fitted to Transit, that means the engine was available in all RWD models at the time, and also a FWD, as we've mentioned, in RS2000. Can't think of many other engines with this configuration interchangability!
Few possible reasons for being phased out, one was the lack of reliability of the camchain (when they went, they usually took the engine with them), another was new regs coming into force etc saw the emergence of the new Zetec range, lighter and more accomodating of emissions related components.
