3.9 or 4.1 ?

Hey I'm thinking of buying a 80's XF fairmont or Falcon. Having come from the 4cycl scene I don't know much about em. I already have a very fast Capri so I'm not looking for another power project just something to cruize in with the lads.
It will also be my daily driver but I'm aware of the economy issue lol!

It has to be the XF or XD shape as that's what I like.

What are the differences between the 3.9 and the 4.1 6's ?
I'm sure to want the EFi version for economy.
I'm assuming I would also want a 5 speed T5 ?
Do the auto's come in different forms or are they all crap?

How much cheaper is a 4.1 EFi to run than a factory 302 V8? Because if there's not a big difference I may as well get and 8 ?

Any advice appreciated!

Re: 3.9 or 4.1 ?

You wont get a 3.9 in an X series. They are 3.3l or 4.1. The 3.9 and 4.0 began with the EA's.
The 4.1 EFI system in apparantly really crap and hard to fix if it goes wrong.

Same EECIV as in EA-ED

Can get the 4.0 to fit with XH ute engine mounts.

Re: 3.9 or 4.1 ?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the carby and EFI are quite similar in economy anyway. My carby is incredibly economical. EFI (in the 4.1 anyway) just = more stuff to go wrong for more $$. T5 isn't essential but a manual is a start. I don't know how much worse a 302 would be on fuel though but I'm sure it is substantial..... + rego + insurance + etc etc etc. If you really aren't looking for a power project an XD-XF 6 will suit ya fine.

Yes they will be 3spd's, get a 4spd manual, plenty strong and they dont need that 5th gear thanks to the 2.77 diff.
