What options are there regarding replacement piping between the airbox and throttle body? This area of the intake is fairly restricitve (at airbox, pipe is only about 48mm dia.) and i want to know if it can be replaced with something that doesn't cost like $300 (...Stainless tube..which would allow the air to get very hot before entering the engine, so defeating the purpose of a CAI)
Thanks

depending on what car you have and what induction piping you already have .. there are a few options, I chose to go 3"mandrel bent pipe, I gained a little.. but nothing to write home about as you don't gain alot of power from these sort of modifications, I chose mine more for looks and to piss off the big black ugly stock piping.
As for the air getting hot, the pipe stays rather cool, just as cool as the stock one, and the car runs fine..
Your biggest single improvement IMO is likely to come from replacing the tapered bellmouth inside the airbox lid with a non-tapered one. As Xchasr said, nothing huge to be gained in this area - not worth the $$ unless you're talking boost or severe headwork I reckon

Well I forget the exact figures, but it goes down to roughly half the size of the intake snorkel. Picking up the air from the middle of the box is good for flow, but I seriously doubt that restriction helps at all.

The EF box flows 18% better than the EL and Au box, so it can't be doing too much wrong.
Only problem is EL and AU piping doesn't fit on the EF airbox lid and the EF piping flows the worst of the lot. Not sure if the BA piping fits the EF or EL lid, I'll try find out.

dang, stanley knife cut mine in half so I have the bigger bellmouth.. biggers always better.. so i thought.. lol :p
I spoke to a guy at an exhaust shop in Geraldton about this. He fits 3" steel piping, but coats it with HPC - keeps it a lot cooler than regular stainless steel.
Whats a stainless 3" pipe to replace the black piping worth??
