I recently purchased a 98 AU XR6HP, and agree the idle is a bit rough. I checked a couple of other examples on car yards, most with higher km's (mine is 36,000) and they all seem the same.
But when it comes down to it, as long as it does'nt flame out at the lights and runs fine at speed, who cares.
I rented an AU3 forte up in NT last week, idled much smoother, but was much wheezer than the XR, real glad I bought the XR. The forte seemed to run smoother on the long roads, less suspension crashing and thumping due to higher profile tyres and more complient suspension, but did'nt have the same footholding and way to much body roll for my liking. It did'nt mind doing 1200km at an average of 140km/h, cool, rev limiter a bit of a pain, again glad I got the XR.
yeh ford has told my parent s this for 2 years "they all do that"
Bullshit, this is a little more than factory computer settings/or what ever,I hadnt driven the car in a while ,drove it on the week end and couldnt beleive how bad it is ,my ed xr6 has never idled this bad ,my club escort has got a big cam in it and its more tame than this,,
Does anybody know of faults in the electrical system in these cars related to this idle problem as I think ford are taking us for a ride.
I don't know if this will fix it, but try "re-learning" the idle.
Start car let idle for 2 minutes with each of the following conditions:
1) In park will all accessories off
2) In drive (handbrake on) all accessories off
3) In park with lights and aircon on
4) In drive with lights and aircon on.
Might help, this is the normal cure for a bad idle after the battery has been disconnected.
Try cleaning the throttle body, and plugs... You would be surprised how much difference that makes... especially if your running an oil based air filter.
Have you tried re-setting the B.E.M.?? On the Ef / El you disconnect the battery, ignit. on, and stomp the brake, but i dont know if its the same.
Failing that, get the car, and drive it like a bastard around the block a few times.... and it'll clean out the carbon deposits.
Don't bother wasting your time on plugs & throttle bodies etc. the idle is normal. To produce the amount of power they do & pass emissions, have reliability, fuel efficientcy & drveability there has to be a trade off somewhere.
