confused backfire = rough idle = im stumped

hey guys,

just fitted an ef cam to my ea, shit mine was so worn it aint funny.

but today after leaving tafe i drove into town and then on the way home i stopped into maccas, after i reversed and put it into drive and touched the accelerator (I didnt give it anything at all) it backfired and turned off. turned the car back on and the car was idling really rough. driving was fine just idling was way off!!!

any one have any idea what could be wrong???

i dont think its the cam other wise it would be doing it even while im driving. wouldnt it?

the air box was a bit loose but i dont think it would cause the rough idling, it might have caused the backfire, but i doubt it would cause the rough idle? no idea!

if any one knows of anything that might be the problem please feel free to help.

thanks guys and girls.

Re: backfire = rough idle = im stumped

I could have blown the vacuum line off the MAP sensor or even stuffed it.

Re: backfire = rough idle = im stumped

i had a vacum leak, the two hose's came undone after driving on rugged and bumby gravl, i think it was the vacum hose, it was behind the carby on my EA.

also what is a CAM?

the best way i can explain what a cam is that its a shaft (cam is just short for camshaft) which rotates to open a different valve at a time. on the front of a cam is a sprocket which is turned around by a belt or chain in an ea's case that is attatched to another sprocket which is on the crank, every valve is opened in one full rotation. on the actual camshaft itself it has 12 lobes (on an ea's case) which are called cams. these lobes are a certain amount of degrees away from each other, these lobes spin and scrape on a rocker arm which is pushed down to open a valve.

this is the best i can explain without a diagram.

hope this was some help to you xtream ea.

can some one tell me were the vacuum lines are on the multipoint because i have no idea??????????

Re: backfire = rough idle = im stumped

The exact same thing happened in my g'friends ED, i was driving and boom bad idle but fine when going.
Turned out to be the intake manifold gasket. So any holes in your intake than shouldnt be there would make it idle funny.
