I've got an intermittent problem with the idle in my EBII Falcon S (manual). Sometimes when idling (usually while waiting at traffic lights), the revs will suddenly drop, for no apparent reason. The engine will almost stall and then the revs come back up. A few seconds later the same thing happens. This pattern continues. If I turn the engine off and then restart it the problem goes away for awhile. Sometimes it doesn't do it at all. It's not a big problem, because the engine never stalls and seems to run fine otherwise. Any ideas as to what could be causing this problem?
I have no idea what causes it, but I would be looking at how the car controls its idle. I think they have a solonoid or something. Maybe someone knows how to test them? I assume it doesnt miss on any cylinders when this happens, just the revs die down then come up.
A crossfire between leads would occur when driving as well, but is possible.
They have an idle speed control valve (ISCV) or Air By-pass Valve - which regulates air around the throttle butterfly to control the idle speed under different conditions i.e. air con on, electrical load due to thermo fans operating etc. They do get gummed up but generally this happens over time & won't normally be an intermittant problem with the idle - it'll usually be a constantly crap idle.
But in any case it sounds electrical to me. Perhaps a dodgy plug even.
