The other day a friend of mine (who works in a muffler and exhaust store) told me that there WILL be a new law comming in, in 2005 that the police can fine people for running non factory exhaust systems. the fine will be aprox $300 and 2 points, his boss was told this by the local police department. What i was wondering was has anyone else heard anything about it or is it just a pile of S@#t, because it sounds so stupid they might just do it.

Doesn't make any sense to me. Perhaps they'll lower the noise level tolerances, but there is no justification for banning aftermarket exhausts altogether.

nah thats just bullshite,

cars such as our old e series falcons can have exhaust damage etc from bumps and exhaust shops wont replace them with the factory design they will replace it with a higherflow exhaust, because it is better for the engine. Just like exhaust shops replace crapped exhaust manifolds with extractors...

thats just crap that pen pushers come up with like p platers not being allowed out after 10pm on fri and sat nights.

If the exhaust system doesn't meet epa/rego requirements, sure. But if it is legit by epa/rego standards, and conforms to the ADR's the car was built to... the cops don't have a leg to stand on.

A very similar law was passed here in New Zealand, where your exhaust cannot be louder than the day it came out of the factory. Thats right, not a single dB louder. Of course this is complete bullshit, and 99% of the cops dont care about your exhaust unless it really is excessively loud, and most places will still give you a Warrant of Fitness with an aftermarket exhaust.

As said previously, they've got the story wrong, or it total BS.

Apart from anything else, OEM exhausts are impossible to obtain for older vehicles, so this would essentially defect anything older than probably 10 years.

At the end of the day, if it isn't illegally loud, and is still filtering the appropriate gases, a better performing exhaust is better for the environment (more efficient=less fuel).

They are not imposible to obtain, most exaust manufacturers mate factroy spec systems.

You dont need a loud system to make power, most noisey systema are just loud and have minimal, if any benefits.
