Hey guys went to sell my car this weekend and they wanted to see if it was fine to get someone to come and check it out. I said fine. Anyone long story short he said the bottom end bearings are worn and wont be a reliable car. People declined the car. I don't really know much about cars but how could he tell without ripping the engine down??

If you get a dull, heavy knock at idle, they're stuffed. Otherwise he can't tell. I think he's just trying to lower the price of the car, personally.

Well I know it makes a noise but thats the tappets which are a common problem. Might try and have a listen tommorow to see if I can hear anything else.

Ok started it today and can hear a sound from the bottom end but sounds more like a squeal than a knock. Still dosnt sound to good though. This was at idle. Sounds like a nice expensive job ripping down the engine just to get to them bastard bearings. :(

what type of car/motor? you might be able to change them while it the car.

i have that same knocking sound at idle.
So it is definately the bottom end bearings?
What price would you be looking at to fix this problem?
How long will the car last before you start screwin the engine up?

Its an eb falcon so its an inline 6. Im guessing its not cheap as you would have to rip the motor apart to get to it?
Just had my head done last year as well and I had it serviced last week so im pretty sure my mechanic would have picked it up if it was the bearings but didn't. Might have to see how much I get for a trade in and hope they offer me 2k for it. So pissed off about it and to top it off was getting my stereo ripped out and putting my stock one back and finding out that the place that did my stero didnt even put the cross overs for my front splits and just used electrical tape to put the wires together.

you wont need to rip apart the whole motor. easiest way to do it is pull out the motor. and place it on a rotatable engine stand. then turn it upside down and replace the main bearings. while your there do the big ends. wont cost much if you can do the work your self. you will need the bearings(obviously) and a new sump gasket. also check on the crank where the thrust bearing is as they can wear a grove in them. if it has you will need to source another crank. also make sure you tourqe them down in the right sequence and tension.

Squealing. Not the belts is it? What kind of squeal? Is it worse if you open the throttle hard?

EED - not definitely, but a good indicator. Sometimes broken engine mounts will knock

Any competent mechanic should be able to listen to it and tell you; should be free too. If I were you, I'd pitch up at a few mechanics shops (and remember, bigger is not always better) and ask them.
Come to that, where in Perth are you? I'm probably a bit far away, but if you're willing to travel to Kalamunda I can send you round to Ralph. He's a wrecker with a mechanic's license. Does bloody good work at reasonable rates, much better than Ultra-Tune hehe
