cam or cam gear

Gday all,

the minister for home affairs has freed up a small amount of the money that i have earn't and am thinking about getting a cam gear or getting surecam to grind a new cam for me. I have a xh ute with pacemakers crow stage 2 2.5 inch exhaust etc etc. What would give me better acceleration??? getting the cam gear and retarding it or getting a whole new cam??? anyone know of a decent grind that comes in about 2000 like the crow stage 2???

cheers

Dinga - didn't you sell the Crow Stage 2 cause it was the wrong one for you ute? Or have you still got it? In which case can I have it?

Re: cam or cam gear

Seeing as you already have a Crow stage 2 cam, the vernier gear makes more sense. At least that way you will be able to dial it in to Crows specs, or put the peak wherever you want it.

Re: cam or cam gear

i did have the wrong cam at one stage but i rang crow and they swapped it with the au cam for free. i thought that was pretty good. i am leaning towards getting something lumpier from surecam but am worried that it might take too much away down low. i have a spare au cam if i need it so i may get that reground. can anyone sugest any specs that work well ie cut in around 2000 and rev reasonably freely.

Don't stress, I'll go buy one anyway. Did the car go much harder?

Re: cam or cam gear

i just sent you a PM on this subject a few mins ago - before i saw the thread.

the cam i have now (surecam custom regrind) is less peaky than the factory one - its just got more guts everywhere - i picked up a quarter of a second at willowbank the other nite, and thats despite now having bigger, heavier wheels, and crap launches due to no grip.

just take your cam there and tell them what you want out of it, what mods you have and are planning etc. trust me, they wont fuk it up.

I doubt the stage 2 crow peaks anywhere near 3000rpm, probably nearer to 4500rpm. I am assuming you're talking about hp not torque, even then the std cam is already about 3000-3500rpm. You shouldn't advance a cam more than 4 degees from its designed installation specs. If you have to you have selected the wrong cam. Also if you advance OR retard too much you will lose power everywhere.

To realistically to get a engine to peak at 2000rpm it would have no power at all above 4000rpm. The ports and valves would be small to promote velocity not volume and the cam would almost have round lobes on it (puny cam).

Re: cam or cam gear

so your saying a stage 2 cam would peak at about 4500rpm? so i will have standard power upto 4500rpm then it will kick in?.. i want to have fast take off's i dont really go for top speed only accelleration power off the line.. how would i get this?

also would a cam regrind be a better idea?
