Started on Wednesday and finished on Friday....I now have a 97'EL XR6 engine plonked into my EB and I must say im very very very happy! My good friend Soxx helped me out with his wisdom and knowledge and I must say a big thank you to him as without him I wouldnt have got it done and if I did would have been farting around for ages, so thxs Soxx.
Ok down to business....Wednesday started to pull everything off so we could lift the engine out, no major hassles apart from a bit of skin off the hands and sore knuckles. The only really problem encountered here was the top 2 left bellhousing bolts, they were very hard to reach, so in the end we decided to take whole bellhousing off with the motor so just took it off from the gearbox. Using the engine stand just moved engine back so we could see the bolts and took them off then, easy. Also dont forget to put a board up against the air conditioning condenser, you dont want the engine wrecking the fins. Engine pops out!
Next stage quickly degrease engine so it could dry overnight.
Thursday - Check Thrust bearing and change, we did.
Next we now had to throw some of our Eb gear onto the el engine...these included Flywheel,Clutch gear (Changed spigot bearing too), engine mounts and lower bell housing mounts, changed sparkplug leads while engine was out, thermostat body, Soxx put my old loom onto the new engine and only had to change a few connections that were different but no major dramas....Also while engine was out we replaced coolant pipes with fresh o-rings.
Used aligning tool so when we put the engine into the gearbox sline it will line up without too much dramas.
Now to get the engine into car...we connected bellhousing back onto the motor and just tilted it like a missile so it would clear, just made it, then all we had to do was line it all up give it a shake and abracadrabra she slides in! Bolt gearbox upto bell housing and bolt the engine mounts up and then just a matter of putting it all back together.
Friday - A few things that caught us out... bolted eb air conditioner on and doesnt line up with the serpentine belt pulleys, too short...so had to get el air pump and bracket to suit.
Ahhh dont forget to plug in map sensor too, or it will sound like the engine is very sick....
Also had to make a adaptor for the coolant hoses as eb and el are slightly different, but thats no real drama.
Also put el thermo fans on which bolted up nicely and just running them on a relay for now, so they are always on, but will eventually wire them in properly...still a few small things to do but its all there! drives quietly, smoothly and very responsive..... Be nice when get extractors and system, puter to work the bbm and maybe a cam.....
I hope I havent forgot anything but i know i have....Care to add anything Soxx??????
We also had to change accel cable because of different linkage on BBM manifold TB.
The only wire on loom I had to change was for the ICS. I simply cut off plug from new loom and soldered it into the old loom.
mongrelEB-
Yeh, it was a fairly straight forward swap.
I have the EL pin diagram, but not EB.
Are they vastly different, because we will be sourcing an EL ECU at a later date to make the BBM work.
im pretty sure that the K-frames are different, and EF mounts dont fit a EB K-frame, but thats just from a vague memory of looking at mums car (EF) during a service...im probably wrong.

Yeah thats right!
Just took it today for a run up to Blackheath and never missed a beat! Very smooth, quiet and much more responsive then the Eb engine and 4th and 5th gear roll-ons are much better too.
