G'day guys,
I've got an EL Fairmont Ghia which came with the EL XR6 engine. One of my mates reckons the Fairmont Ghia's got the XR6 engine, but not the XR6 computer.
Can anyone confirm whether or not it did get the XR6 computer?
Cheers,
Mike

Its not an XR6 ECU, there is a specific ECU for EL Ghias.
The Ghia ECU has the XR6 engine management and shift modes when in power mode. But the economy mode is the same as a normal I6.
And most importantly, the Ghia ECU has the speed sensitive power steering capability, something that the XR6 ECU doesnt.
So its kind of a hybrid.... But at least it will do everything the XR6 will.
As for the Crow Stage 3, the ECU would run it, but I doubt it would idle at all. Anything over a stage 2 from most cam places would require a piggy back computer (Unichip, etc) or better, an aftermarket ECU. I cant remember if its a stage 2 or 3 crow cam that comes in a kit, and the kit includes a unichip or similar.
It is the stage three crow cam that comes with the chip, the stage two doesn't require one. And I wouldn't try to run the cam without the chip as I think it would be fairly lumpy.

Well that'd explain why it goes that much harder with the economy mode off. It's a way bigger difference than the EF and AU I had made. Damn I want a lumpier cam than the one it's got but can't afford to chip it. Would the stage 2 or JMM mock Dev 3 cam go much harder than the XR6 cam?

Maybe have a look at a Wade Stage 2 cam... Its their 1004 profile.
I know a guy who put it into a NL Fairlane, and he got 6rwkw gain. May not seem much, but there must have been something there... He was loosing by a car length to 100 to his makes EF2 Ghia, then started beating him by a car length...
So his mate got the same cam and fitted it to his Ghia (XR6 engine as well), and he went back to beating him by a car length. And the XR6 engine idles really good with this cam to. Close to stock, but a little lumpier.
Its a regrind, so you have to add shims under the lifters. But its not a bad performance gain for a $150 investment.
