I'm looking at upgrading my old XF ute to a second hand AU ute on gas (dual fuel).

All the examples I've looked at have a brown stained coolant reservoir. Is this normal with AUs?? I've only looked at 4, all on gas, and they are all brown.

It's more a testament to poor cooling system maintenance more than anything. If the coolant had been changed regularly in the past and kept clean and fresh, you would probably have a better looking surge tank.

yea my au has the same discolouring and its done 100k. most au's over about 70k do have it, and if u dont like the colouring go to ur local ford dealer and buy one brand new.

Put your finger in & wipe up some of the brown stuff, then tell the seller it has a head gasket problem & offer him at least $2000 less.

Ha ha ha. I like the sounds of that.

Two of the utes have had the radiators replaced with copper ones, after the factory aluminium one failed. This sounds like a pretty common occurance....Ahh well.

I reckon when I get one I might give the cooling system a flush out and soak the surge tank in bleach or caustic soda or something. What sort of coolant do yo use? I use genuine Ford concerntrate in my XR8, but that's $15 for a 500ml bottle that only waters down to a litre. I'd rather something a bit cheaper that I can buy from Super Cheap, or something......

Any suggestions?

I wouldn't risk on saving on cooling for an inline 6, might get a headgasket problem later down the track. The brown stains are probably due to someone adding water to the tank instead of coolant.

I have taken my car to ford for cooling flushes, and the tank is still looks new with green coolant.

I saw genuine coolant concerntrate for around $50 for a 5 litre container, not sure on how many litres it makes. it will probley do the whole system and a bit more.

Head Gasket Or Like The Others Said Unpure Water , I Have A Filter Jug At Home I Use Just For My Au , Nice Clean Water Anytime , Cheaper In The Long Run Than Buying Bottles Of Distilled Water From Parts Shop .
