I read somewhere that that the block is the same as the old 4.0 litre i6's. Does anyone know?

It might be possible but to what advantage , the whole motor is a better bet .

Thats all well and good if youve got a spare 5 grand lying around Im just curious, because it would be a good way to save some dosh and increase total horsepower by having a better breathing engine without the money cost of head porting and cams etc.

It's never that easy , and for the price of the head an AUII motor would be far more compatable with very little alteration to the wireing .

No it doesnt bolt on, and it doesnt really make sense to go down that path anyway. SOHC dont need porting until you are chasing big numbers, and you can get cams for $120. Complete BA engines are under $1000 so stuffing around with just the head is not good bang for buck.

I havnt seen any for a grand, shit an i6 like mine goes for at least $1500 as a rebuilder. If you know of a place that sells them for that much let me know ill be in.
