Hi, Ive got an EA with CFI that id like to convert to mpfi with an el manifold and id like to use an el computer to avoid pinging problems and also run a set of thermos and im just wondering whats involved in fitting smartlock

It is possible, however i belive the unit to do it costs around $300. Best thing to do, would be to purchase a wrecked el gli at the auctions, and use everything from that.
Ive just about completed fitting the full el dash, console, computer and loom to my NA. Its not a hard job to do, as just about everything bolts into the ea connectors. Otherwise, try to source the dash loom, ignition etc from an ebii onwards, and fit that to your existing dash. You will still need the el computer, with a couple of extra wires though to run the bbm and the thermos.

You don't have to use the knock sensor BTW, doesn't seem to bother the computer if you leave it out although it would obviously be a desirable thing

My advice: Use either an EL dash/engine bay loom as Low NA has done, or if you want to keep the dash the same, use an EBII or ED dash and rune extra wires for the thermos. The EL computer will fit the EA-ED computer plug, but you will have to add wires for the thermos, BBM, and K/S, and move the P/S wire.
Depends which way you want to go, using the EL dash is mucho easy but if you don't like then the ED + a little wiring.

ok thanks for the tips,

id like to keep it as cheap as possibly and was wondering if i can change to a smartlock ignition barrel or do i have to use a whole dash+dash loom that originally came with smartlock

You'll need the Smartlock ignition barrel and Smartlock modual. Having said that I dunno how hard it would be to wire in a modual, don't they control all the electrics?

Or could pay Ford $300 bucks for the Smartlock bypass unit.

If I were in your situation I'd either be getting the bypass unit or going for a complete EB/ED Smartlock loom.

You'll need the barrel.
Realistically it won't cost you more than $200 from any good wrecker for the ED or EL dash/wiring/barrel I shouldn't think, provided you don't want the climate control at the same time. I paid $150 last time, that was mates rates mind :) After all, it's not an item which a wrecker will sell very often!
