ive read a few similar threads to this, but i had to ask about this particular one.
the EA mpfi gradually died friday morning.
the dizzy cap and leads were nothing but a burnt out shell of corrosion.... biblical in magnitude. The carbon brush in the centre had fused into the cap.
so i replaced the rotor button, the dizzy cap and the leads.
the car turns over, and while it wont start it feels like it will.... ie an accelerated winding but stopping short of a startup. If it was a carby you'd pump the accelerator a few times to fire it up.
what are the signs of a dead TFI unit? I have a new coil that i havent fitted yet.
Sounds like the fuel pump. Can you hear it prime itself when you turn the key on? You should be able to hear a buzzing noise coming from the boot. It sounds like it's got enough fuel in the lines to give a bit of a kick, but not enough to keep in running.

Remove a high tension lead from spark plug side and connect an old plug, rest on metal surface of engine or body and crank engine, if there is spark it possibly a fuel problem.
No spark; it could be ignition module or pick-up or coil.
my gauge was lying to me... apparantly it was stuck, and registering a quarter when in fact there was none. Bone dry.
Had i removed the fuel rail feeder and cranked, it would have been obvious. I did undo it, but when i heard a hiss and smelt fuel, i considered everything was fine. Not far enough tho.
had i poured a jerry of fuel and cranked until fuel made it to the rail, then broooom she would have fired up apparently.... Hehe SO close.
i became bogged down in spark related matters... argh.
