I bought a 6 cylinder ea cheap from a friend of my son's, who had bought it to do up.
When he bought the car he was told that it ran well and was used daily up to about a month before it was sold. But when he got it home it ran like a hairy goat with heaps of smoke.
Since he's not real bright when it comes to these things i bought it.
We thought it might of been the fuel injection 'cpi' because some one had taken the carby apart and put it back together with aviation gue and silastic. The fuel had melted it all through the carby. So I replaced it with a carby and manifold that I know is very good. But it still runs like a two stroke and kills mosquito's with the smoke coming out the back, which stinks of fuel.
I replaced the dizzy cap and leads.
I also check the plugs, they are sooty and smell of fuel, number three plug was still wet with fuel.
When the other fellow bought the car they told him that some pulse thing was shorting out and he would have to pick the car up from the mechanics were they had droped it off to be fixed.
There seems to be a lot of noise coming back through the carby.
I'd check the vacuum hose that goes from the manifold to the MAP sensor. It's the little black think screwed to the firewall just near the washer bottle. Make sure the hose is attached and isn't split or deteriorated. The MAP sensor is the main sensor the ECU uses to determine the fuel mixture.
Thanks
I replaced the computer and the map sensor and it ran slightly better "NOT"
I check the timing, put the whole lot back to top dead centre because the rotor was half way between 1 and 5. But that made it worse, it stopped a lot of the smoke but now it just keeps popping and backfiring through the carby.
I am starting to think maybe someone has been playing with the motor and stuffed up a lot more than just the carby.
You could smell the fuel in mine ......... I thought it was getting too much fuel ..... I am more than likely wrong with your car ....... Mine seemed to use a crap load of fuel when this was happening ,the spark plugs clogged up and it ran like a dog, it backfired which generally reads to be too much fuel.........
Mine had a few other things going on as well at the same time that you havent described but thats why I thought I would respond as it took me about 5 months to rectify my problem...... and the fuel pump was the last thing anyone thought of
If you go to the following thread you will see all the things that happened in the end..... My problem seemd to be a long and dragged out one that started seemingly minor compared to my trip to Bathurst & beoynd.....
no no no... that doesn't help me I have the same problem
start cold no prob, 5sec later idle rough & black smoke.
mind you that was after i had simular problems that of Mother Nature some where along long long time ago this problem went away, (magic i guess).
As you are reading (and laughing at my expense $) keep in mind this was over a period of 3 years... now read on.
lets see what was replaced...
ICS motor ...no change
ECU ...no change (not cheap)
ECU relay ...no change
throttle position sensor ...no change
this is a good one
netural position switch ...you guessed it ...no change
air sensor ...no change
coolant temp sensor ...no change
map sensor ...no change
dizzy & TFI ...no change
spark plugs ...no change
fuel pump ...no change
fuel filter ...no change
you may well ask new or second hand parts... have a guess!
O i forgot to mention
recon motor ...no change
what about - new gear box ...ahh :wnc: ...no change
now if only someone knew someone that knew someone that knew someone... well my problems would just... go away
all jokes aside PLEASE HELP!
'89 EA CFI 3.9 wagon - but the body is in good nick.
Well my EA is doing all this farting, misfiring, spitting fuel out the back after converting to MPFI.
Thinking its fuel pressure related, seems to too little with CFI pump, and too great with MPFI pump. Getting taken to the mechanics 2moro to get a fuel pressure test done to see what is really happening.
Can get it running really rough with a shitty set of injectors and the CFI pump, and not running at all with either pump with a good set of injectors.
whats it like when it's driving? does it still pour out the black fuel smoke?
seems to me it could be a vacuum leak somewhere or the oxy sensor is stuffed.
Give that a try.
