Hey guys,

My mate has an XY GS with a 250 non x-flow (although the rings are a bit sad), extractors, cam, zorst, big carb, toploader etc which for my EB used to be fairly easy to beat.

He is now building a 351W for it. It's bored 030" with ACL race series pistons and rings, extractors, zorst, Heatseeker stg2 cam and Crow valve train and push rods, I think he is sticking with the stock intake manifold though.

I'm just wondering how you guys think my EB would go against it when it's finished? Keeping in mind my car will hopefully have extractors and a Crow stg 3 cam (depending on if I can get it running properly without a chip) and his XY only has a 2.92 diff.

What sort of mods should I be looking at to retain the top spot??? I plan on keeping my mods pretty secret until after we have gone up against each other. I may not be able to beat him, but I want to stay up there with him.

Id say it would be close, but the key is torque and traction off the lights.

Against a properly built 351W you would have absolutely no chance.

yeh, my bro has built a fake xy gt and the motor is worth 22 grand... it hammers but not sure on rwkw, but estimated over 250.... built properly a 351 will smoke ya, but cost him a house deposit!!!!

He is only using the stock intake manifold and a stock carby, so that should slow him down a bit.

At least I'll be able to beat him while the engine is wearing in! hehe

What sort of fwkw/rwkw would this sort of setup be putting out as compared to my current setup (4.0L, zorst, T5, 3.27)?

My boss used to be an engine reconditioner and I was talking to him about cams and stuff before, he reckons I shouldn't bother with the adjustable gear because most of them end staying on normal timing marks anyway. But from what I've heard here this is completely incorrect. I got a quote of the place he used to work at, the cam was $385, gear was $295 or a gear kit was $315! Whats the go with the gear kit? What would it come with that the gear alone doesn't come with? I thought these prices were pretty steep as well! And that was apparently mates rates.

This thing has cost him $4500, but he's building it himself. Got the machine work and parts off an engine reconditioner though.

You can't compare stages of cams from different manufacturers, its like comparing apples to oranges. The first 3 stages of heatseeker grind's from what I have seen are VERY mild. What is his carby and are the heads being ported??

Just cause its a V8 there is no need to dismiss the 6. My friends Commodore with a hemi 265 scares the shit out of mild V8's. It kept up with a RB20DET powered Silvia (they thought it had boost too). Also the car is a wagon with POS BW35 auto which needs a higher stall convertor on 3.08 diff. Setup with the right stall convertor the car will do 14's.

You should be able to get the vernier cam gear from Crow for $160 tops. Also there is a guy on the Gold Coast you will regrind a HP4 chiptorque grind for $80exc. Wade have heaps of grinds and will do it for $160exc.

Also no offense but your boss must be a retard!! The Holden V8 is one of a few that if installed on the original timing marks with a billet the cam will be about 3 teeth retarded. To get a friend's cam (holden 304) to straight up we had to advance the cam 3 teeth and retard the gear 2 degrees. Put this cam in on its marks and you would be screaming for the cam grinder's head.

Have you thought about upgrading to a 3.45 or a 3.9 ratio to give you a bit more punch off the line?
