I have a EB that has developed a big engine oil leak. I lost a litre of oil in 200kays of driving today. Oil has also dripped on the cat, causing a lot of smoke! It's leaking somewhere from the back of the motor and am just wondering if the rear main seal can leak such a large amount of oil or would it be comming from somewhere else?

Any help appreciated.

Sounds like my EA but im leaking from the timming cover and from the dipstick (damn blowby) makes a nice mess of the engine bay and i loose about 1ltr of oil in 200ks aswell :(

hmmm, have you checked the rear of your rockercover for leaks?

i would look at the back of your engine see if you can see where its coming from... also check that its not the oil pressure sender that seems to be common to leak from (it on the intake manifold side kind of hard to see)

there is no oil galleries on the back of the engine, only water jackets. the only places it could be from is the sump, rockercover, timing cover or the passenger side of the head.

Take the engine to those high pressure places; spray it with a couple cans of degreaser where all the oil is; then hose it down with water and if its as bad as you say, you should see where the oils coming out by the time you get home!!
Oh; and take a rag with you to get all the water out from around the spark plugs - it likes to sit in around there.

I guess its from rear main seal???...If it leaks bad it would pay to fit a "speedy seal kit" on crank...This way your 99.9 % sure it will fix it....If it has hi milage there is possibly wear in rear seal journel on crank...These kits can be bought from CBC bearings, auto one etc...
