Can any one tell me if it is a fault with the alloy 6cyl heads for coroding or is it common for the head gasket to leak.

Re: EF cylinder head coolant leak

yep...did my ef about a month ago, leaking coolant down the side of the block exhaust side. The reports are that the head bolts are weak and loose there tension, alltho mine seamed to be tight enough when I removed them. The later AU head bolts are said to be stronger. I think the part number is superseaded now so that's all you can get.
If you do the job your self make sure not to lean on the cam tensioner as it breaks easy and is a right pain of a job to replace. Also look at the coolant pipes under the intake and replace them if there is any doubt because they are also a nasty job once the head is back on.
Over all it's an easy job if you have some mechanical knowledge, I did mine in 6 hours, start to finish. That is of coarse unless your head is distorted and needs to be machined.
