EF ECU Blown

I think I have stuffed the ecu on my EF XR6. Jumpstarting without proper efi jumper leads. It surges when idling, cooling fans come on when I start the car on a cold morning, trans econ/power mode light blinks, trans goes into final overdrive at 55kmhr-1100rpm.

Anyone know if there are alternatives to tested second hand ecu's or new ford ones? Any answers before I book with auto elec and he tries to overcharge me.

Re: EF ECU Blown

Check all your connections on the battery terminals. If there is any corrosion or bad/loose connections, particularly on the negative side, it can cause all sorts of weird electrical problems. If there are some dodgy ones, replace all the connections and/or clean them thoroughly and hopefully this will work.

Re: EF ECU Blown

proper efi jump leads? never heard of em!!! pos to pos, neg to neg you cant go wrong i reckon blowing the computer while jumping an efi car is an old wives tale created by someone who thought it was a good excuse not to spare his time.
Any way back to it get out your multimeter and check all your connections are in order, get some big brass block batterey terminals (no corrosion look great) if after all this maybe your computer is screwed. in a post below this (EF Missing) said they got a new one $500 installed.

Re: EF ECU Blown

Try resetting the ECU... leave your pattery terminal lead off for over 10 mins...

Re: EF ECU Blown

Proper e.f.i jumper leads have a surge protector built in, so if there is a short or an open circuit in the battery or wiring it acts like a sponge. I've seen plenty of frazzled computers from jump starts, but it's usually because the leads are put on arse about...

Re: EF ECU Blown

I agree with shano6. There is a definite need to connect the leads in the correct sequence. If there wasn't, why would the car companies put out the information?

there is a company around Bendigo way that will check and repair your ECU. They are called "Hilltronics" and their number is: 5411 6635. All the local car repairers all use him, and u really need an appointment. But he is effing good, and more to the point: cheaper than a replacement ECU.

Re: EF ECU Blown

for the cost of sa second hand ecu ..... its prob cheaper to just replace it.....

(here is a tip, when jump strating leave youre head lights on, this way any "stray" currents will find there way to a ground through youre head lights and not through youre nice ecu.
