EF/EL engine conversion

Some of you might have noticed that i have asked a few stupid questions lately about EFs and ELs etc ...

well here is teh story:

PROBLEM:
EF ex-taxi with 880000km (no typo) on clock + blown headgasket _ lotsa smoke + no RWC/rego

SOLUTION:
EL motor (120000km) + weekend + a few mates + a few cartons + tools

ok here are some pics of the old engine after we have taken it out of the car:

and here are the pics of the new motor:

basically the conversion is pretty much straight forward and a bit time consuming. The most obvious parts that needed changing are the coilpacks and the harmonic balancer. In addition to that u need to change the passanger side engine mount on teh EL engine as that is the bracket for coil packs at the same time. just choose wisely which rubber bits u use for the engine mounts, we found the EL ones were in better shape. Due to the new bloack being a little rusty we just painted it with hydrochlorid acid, which got rid off teh rust and converted the surface to a nice shiny black. while we were at it we gave the head and timing cover a nice work out with autosol and painted teh rocker cover red. to make things easier for us we left the manifolds in the engine bay, which turned out to be a mistake (space limitations), but it saved us from lots of wiring trouble, vacuum lines and fuel lines. All up it was a nice weekend excercise and on top of that good fun.

here are some more pics of the engine in the car:

Re: EF/EL engine conversion

nice work mate. I droped an EL engine into my EA over a weekend, its not as hard as people make it out to be.

But yes. Remove the inlet and exhaust manafolds from the car before installing the new engine.

Re: EF/EL engine conversion

we havent started it yet, due to teh fact the we had to swap ALL accessories over as well as well as the coilpacks and balancer it tooks a tad longer than thought and ye the manifolds held us up a bit too. in addition to that i forgot about the inlet manifold gasket and teh thermostat is still missing. oh yea and the radiotor is missing too lol. a few plugs and vacuum lines are also missing but other than that shell be good to go tonight ... ill let yas know

sometimes a little, but sometimes you get the odd pig that will leak green stuff everywhere......

with falcons, it depends on the car.

Re: EF/EL engine conversion

sik EA: i am in townsville ... i spsose shell be good for a fresh build, but ill crak the head open tonight and inspect the cylinder bore. i am not sure if and how many times it has been rebuild, also i am not sure if there are microcracks ... just remember its 880000km! a motor with lower ks might be a better base, as they had lot less stress and a stroker puts lots of stress onto teh block ...
