Some of you might have noticed that i have asked a few stupid questions lately about EFs and ELs etc ...
well here is teh story:
PROBLEM:
EF ex-taxi with 880000km (no typo) on clock + blown headgasket _ lotsa smoke + no RWC/rego
SOLUTION:
EL motor (120000km) + weekend + a few mates + a few cartons + tools
ok here are some pics of the old engine after we have taken it out of the car:
and here are the pics of the new motor:
basically the conversion is pretty much straight forward and a bit time consuming. The most obvious parts that needed changing are the coilpacks and the harmonic balancer. In addition to that u need to change the passanger side engine mount on teh EL engine as that is the bracket for coil packs at the same time. just choose wisely which rubber bits u use for the engine mounts, we found the EL ones were in better shape. Due to the new bloack being a little rusty we just painted it with hydrochlorid acid, which got rid off teh rust and converted the surface to a nice shiny black. while we were at it we gave the head and timing cover a nice work out with autosol and painted teh rocker cover red. to make things easier for us we left the manifolds in the engine bay, which turned out to be a mistake (space limitations), but it saved us from lots of wiring trouble, vacuum lines and fuel lines. All up it was a nice weekend excercise and on top of that good fun.
