EL XR6 Engine wont rev - Ford Forums - Mustang Forum, Ford Trucks, Ford Focus and Ford Cars

I've just put an EL XR6 engine into an EF. Converted it back (or is that forward???) to coil pack. It idles fine, but won't rev over about 3500rpm. Anyone got any ideas??

did u set the thing up in the oil pump drive correctly there is a key way in it that a split pin goes through must be like this at tdc

I do believe so, but... Whilst stuffing round with everything to try and find the problem i moved it forward, backward in fact tried every position. in the end no matter where it was placed, it didn't make much difference to the way the motor ran, it's currently back in the right spot, but could this suggest another problem with the ignition setup maybe??

is it in power or economy mode? in economy it changes much earlier and at lower RPM's.

does is misfire badly when it gets to 3500?

Fuel pump maybe?
Did you get a different one or is the same?

Yep it's the same fuel pump. Has to be in economy or it will not change gears at all, and it misfires very badly at 3500.

Did you change the computer as well ?
I don't know if you have to for this sort of thing, but I know when looking at aftermarket chips EF and EL chips were interchangable due to the coil pack/dizzy difference between the 2

The EL engine is no longer dizzy it's been completly swapped to coil-pack. In other words block and head are EL ignition is all EF

Yeah I realise you've swapped it over, but does the computer know that ?
I just reread my post above about the chips and noticed I said they were interchangable - I meant to say they are NOT interchangable
