I'm think of buying an EL XR6 head to fit onto my 3.9L MPI EA engine. Will this bolt straight on? I plan on using the standard EA manifold because of my limited budget and lack of experience working with electronics, I dont have the skills or resources to wire up the dual runner manifold.

So is this possible? EA motor with EL XR6 head and standard EA manifold? If I were to do this mod, what sort of power gains could I expect?

Along with the EL head, make sure you also get the CAM, rocker gear and rocker cover to go with it as they are different from the EA.

Depending on price you might be better off getting a standard EL or even AU head and spending a little bit on porting.

at the least if you dont put on a dual runner get an inlet manifold from an EB SII as they had bigger ports. easiest way to tell an EA one from an EB SII is the EA will have 87DA cast on it and the EB SII will have 91DA. the power gains wont be astronomical but should be of some improvement. you will have lower compression too as those heads were designed to work with the pistons that have an 8.5cc (EF-EL) dish in the top of the piston where as your EA will have 15.2cc dish the EB-ED had 14.05cc dish if anyone is interested.

Weeman - I plan on buying a complete head from a wrecking yard, with rockers, cams, etc.

John_xr6 - cheers for the tip about the manifold, I'll look into this. The compression isnt an issue because I plan some head work, including milling the deck for a higher compression ratio.

probably not much on an EA head but if he was to leave the EA manifold on when he puts his new head on it will only restrict it.
