confused Ford I6 = Nissan RB30?

My mate, who has gone to the darkside (bought a *cringe* VS SS ute) reckons that Ford I6 motors (EA onwards) are a version of Nissan RB30 (a la VL Commodore) motors. I told him he's full of it, but he insists. He reckons it goes back to the days of XFs, when Ford did a deal with Nissan (remember The Ute).:o IS there any truth in this slanderous allegation?

Thats an absolute load of crap.
The ford 6 has been and always will be a FORD 6.

The deal with the XD ute was that nissan just got to rebadge a ford ute, like ford used to rebadge patrols.

This belief might flow from the development work Honda did on the 4.1 alloy head. I've heard somewhere that Honda was involved in EA donk development too. Get him to have a look at a 3lt Nissan and an EA donk and see which one looks like it descended from the XD-F 4.1.

Total toss, your mate is a little ignorant of the history of that deal.

The Ford/Nissan 'deal' was simply this - Nissan got to rebadge the Falcon ute, Ford got to rebadge the Nissan Patrol. My father owned one of the top of the line short wheel-based Ford Mavericks, which were a cut above the equivalent Nissan due to the added extras Ford put into it. That Maverick still had Nissan logos in the engine bay, and the Nissan ute had Ford badges in it's engine bay. The deal was simply to get around government regulations during that time regarding local content. The deal had nothing to do with shared engine development. No such thing as an RB41, RB39 or an RB40 is there?

No he's not a pen pusher actually, he is a qualified Panel Beater and Spray Painter and knows his way around a toolbox very well. He's built up more cars than I can count including 350 EH, XYGT (rebuilding again at the moment), numerous Bombodores, HQ-Z utes to name a few. That is why I sorta thought there might be some truth in it. I think he is just winding me up, the bastard!!:o

If you can track it down in a library or motor bookshop that keeps past issues, there was a big spread in Wheels? Motor Manual? whatever when EA was released in 1988 and it has a big section on engine development, which should settle the argument.

Mate about the Ford I6 and RB30 being related is total bull.

The RB30 used in the VL Commodore was an engine Nissan built specifically for the VL, they don't use this engine in Japan.
The related engine to the RB 30 is the RB20 (used in the R32 Skyline GTS-T), RB25(used in the R33) and RB26 used in Godzilla.
The centre bore of the falcon engine has been the same since the 1960 falcon. No connection with Nissan what so ever.

Falchoon, tell ya mate this, does he know that the 3.8L V6 oh wow high tech engines in the current commos were actually buick engines back dating back to the 60's.
Does he know that this 3.8 V6 is actually designed for a fwd car, hence the rough as guts driveline vibrations and excessive oil consumption in the VN.
Holden had to modify an east-west config engine to a north-south.

I heard somewhere that the Holden power steering pump uses the same casting as the one for the 1950's plymouth, or some ancient yank dinosaur anyway...
