Ok my engine is on its way out, the lack of compression in 2 cyls, the noisy lifters and now the timing chain sound a bit lose.

I have 2 options to get it all going well again

1. find an AU or similar engine that is already built for gas (ford gas setup) and drop that in...

Or

2. Get my engine (XG 4.0L) rebuilt with upgrades to accomodate the gas a bit better. If i do this I will upgrade to the point that it will be a gas-only engine. ie rebore, pistons, rings, cam, head shave, valve stem seals, valve seats, maybe a port cleanup and re-tune.

What do you think is the better option?
How much should this be costing me all up?

Ask yourself what you're prepared to spend and why
Any engine from EA onwards can handle gas ok

Let your fingers do the walking..
Call a rebuild engine company you'd have some faith in and get a price..

Call around wreckers and ask what they have and how much..
A secondhand engine will be half the cost of a rebuild, or less, but with some wear and some risk..

hund around for an engine from an XH - a lot of them are already set up for factory gas and they are starting to come through the wreckers already
