confused Holley 500 on 250 2v

I have put a Holley 500 on a 250 2v. Wanting to know what would be a good jet size to start with to get her going, currently has 68's as off a 302. Head has cleaned up inlets with port matched Stainless valves, and has a street style cam. Bought motor off a mate and his reconditioner mate can't remember the specs of the cam, but it is basically street. I have had the motor going with the standard Stromberg carb and it was too lean at the top end, but the motor sounded nice and lumpy. Any thoughts on jets etc and tuning this carb would be appreciated, even just near enough to get her driving. Would like to get motor going with this carb but will prob change to a 4 barrel later, esp if the 500 has flat spots. Cheers everyone.

Re: Holley 500 on 250 2v

My advice would be to get it tuned properley, on a dyno and all that. Guestimation can result in burnt valves, holed pistons and all that yucky stuff, apart from poor running and lots of hair tearing out.

A 500 is too big, put a 350 Holley on it.

Re: Holley 500 on 250 2v

Cheers to those that answered. I was told by some that a 500 worked OK and infact i thought i had bought a 350, but didn't know what to look for as far as sizing of thoats etc. Found out later what it had come off ( a 302) and the CFM . Why the hell didn't the Holley manufacturers just put on 350 or 500, is that too simple?.
Anyhow I will swap it for a 350 as I know someone that said they would like to swap.
Would size 61 main jets be a good place to get the engine started so i can get it tuned from there?. What are other peoples experiences with this carb on this engine?. What size main jets did you end up with once you had the carby tuned?.

My xc falcon six ran a 600 4 barrell in the end and the secondaries where made to cut in.My brother had a xa 250 2v head motor back in 1980.It had a 2 barrell 350 holley....and I have never been in any car with that sort of acceleration since..never....He never told me what was done to the engine but he did go through 80 dollars worth of fuel on a tank back then!!!!!Itwas amazing....

If I were you one thing I would do is get a set of extractors and cut them where they go 3 to 1 from each bank...cut it there and put a dual exhaust.Do not put a dual exhaust from a single collector.Cut it off!!!!

If there is one thing that really made the difference to that car it was this!!!!

Yeah, I was asking a muffler man in ChCh NZ who is into his early Fords about that and he said the car would sound like a Zephyr. If you nknow anything about those sort of cars then you know they sound a bit sad, But what i dont know is if they took the pipe from the sinqle or where the 3 merged into 2.
I have a set of Genie extractors at the moment into the original single pipe and muffler, and will look into doing the 2 pipe thing when the engine is going properly. What pipe size you think for the dual system? 2" or 21/4"? - anything bigger than that would be too big wouldn't it,?as i still want to have bottom end torque/power off off the line.
Bummer about Bathurst - if so many holdens hadn't bought out the safety car..... : )

Re: Holley 500 on 250 2v

The guy in Christchurch does not know what he was talking about.!!!!!My bros old xa ford sounded like a v8!!!Not like our crossflow sixes today ..but a bad v8!!!

I remember he got the last 2 pipes going into the collector and cut them.So there you will have 2 exposed pipes from the first 3 bank of cylinders and another from the second bank of cylinders...He had twin 2/1/2 inch exhaust...and its acceleration was unbelieveable..It was an auto too....No crosspipes or any of that crap!!!It went straight out....If only my au falcon would go like this I would never sell it..

He used to fang it at 60 miles per hour and would go sideways from all the power!!!

Re: Holley 500 on 250 2v

a 500 holley is not to big.... Look at it this way a 253 holden v8 comes out with a 800cfm carb..
With my old motor in my cortina i ran a redline 4 barrle manifold, with a 650 double pumper, and pacy pipes, and a 2 1/2 exhaust and a monster cam and big 2v clevo valves full rebuilt bottom end , no need for twin pies it will sound like a claped out old v6.
This pulled 165 rwkw on the geelong gordan tafe dyno...i then fitted a quadrajet, and when the secondarys came in it was awesome...
on a 2v 250, i wouldnt go much bigger as the heads even though are much better than the old log head they arnt up to scrach when compared to a crosflow head.

500 will be fine and as a few people have said get it dynoed and jetted to suit

Re: Holley 500 on 250 2v

a 500 holley will bog performance down from low to midrange speed on a 4.1 crossflow engine...
