when i accelerate fairly quickly in third(auto) from 80kph to about 115kph the engine seems to run fine except for short quick little periods of no power. then doing this uphill last night backfired at the same time as the no power bits. the engine was warmed up at the time.

any ideas why?

have you done the usual, checking fuel system, sparks & leads ?
is if EFI ??

ignition too advanced, a plug not firing on each cycle, rich mixture - all the things already mentioned...

Need to know what type of engine to narrow down some options.

Too lean can do it too.. Leaking inlet etc.. Sparkplug leads ???Fuel filter, check fuel pressure ??? eec scan for fault codes ?? Loose or high resistance conection in your injection harness iff it is ??

sorry its from a 95 ef. i'll check the plugs and easy stuff before i get it looked at. it comes and goes now.
