I'm thinking about buying a Dev5 Kit for my AUII Forte. I'm chasing 250 kw at the flywheel. Do you think that it is worth the 5k for the kit, or is there any other viable option? I noticed that the price difference between Dev 3/HL to Dev 4 is the major hike, due to (I think) porting and polishing. Is there another way which would be more cheaper and effective than the Dev 5 kit to chase 250 kw? I know that JMM is a good place and etc, but 5k is a lot, and I want to make sure i make good use of it.
JMM are ok if you dont know/dont care what you want other than 250kw. If you want to be more involved in the development of your engine then you can save a lot of money. Call a few performance workshops and have a chat. Also try to find someone around you that works on saloon race cars, because these guys spend a lot of time cheating power out of these engines.
When I built my engine, I put $2000 into the bottom end which got me machining, balancing, new pistons, gaskets, moly rings, and acl race series bearings, etc. I put another $1200 into the top end that got me a hell of a lot of machining and basically everything replaced (valves, springs, vernier gear, etc). Another $750 for a nice big wade cam and a chiptorque chip to get the thing running nice. This got me a 60rwkw increase from stock for around $4000, and a brand new engine as well.
If I would do it again with a budget of 5g I wouldn’t bother with a naturally aspirated engine. You could probably get away with a Powerdyne supercharger kit from Capa for close to 5 grand (have a talk to them about there reconditioned supercharges - save heaps of $ and they usually have new internals anyway). These kits run 9 pound of boost non intercooled and are rated at 240kw on a otherwise stock engine. Check out http://www.capa.com.au/kits_ford.htm, a very easy way to get power.
Depending on where you are -although these guys do freight stuff out - you may want to chat with ITS performance:
