I have just purchased a '97 XR6 and am loving the performance/power it has to offer.
As I don't know a thing about engine mechanics but would like to trick up the car a little, I have looked on the JMM website and am considering a DEV 2/3 upgrade.
The previous owner has already fitted the car with a 2.5" muffler and K&N Filter (are these anygood??) from what I have seen but as far as I know it doesn't have extractors.
Does anyone have an advice on what I should be getting done to it and how effective the JMM upgrades are on XR6's.
do a search, there is unbeleivable amounts of info around here, you just need to find it.
The concensus on JMM is that they are great, and their products are top quality. K&N filters are alright, dont know how good they are, but their better than the factory jobs.
With a DEV2 or 3 upgrage, you will be getting some decent power gains, im sure one of the more experienced people around here will give you an idea on what gains to expect!!
You can just get certain things from JMM as well - you dont have to purchase the whole Kit, so probably the best thing is just to get your cam changed along with extractors if you dont have them!
Just get the jmm spark plugs and leads with the headers they have the BEST headres around. Ring wade cams. www.wadecams.com
WAde cames are great the best Buck 4 grunt
Has anyone had any problems with a small ticking noise in the engine. Slightly present when idle, but increases when throttle added. My more mechanically minded mates have told me not to worry "it's nothing major" but I can't help but be a little concerned, especially if it gets louder.....
The small ticking noise is very common in falcons. Its just your rockers/tapets. It can be caused by a few things. Wear in the rocker gear, could be in need of an oil change, or oil that has gunged up in the head due to poor maintenance in the past. Next time your doing an oil change, use Nulon oil flush to drain the old oil, then put in some nulon lifter free. If after 2000km or so and the noise hasn't quietened down at all, its most likely rocker wear. If its only a small noise I'd say it just needs a clean out next oil change. Its nothing to worry about really, unless its driving you mad.

Get the race series extractors from Jim Mock, they are the best improvement you can make.
Your cam in the xr6 tend to be good for up to 145 rwkws and go and see a reputable dyno operator and see what power you are running and what your air fuel ratios are like.Generally you will find that these cars run too rich and a chip can transform your car into a 1/4 mile beast.

From the advice I've been given, I'm thinking I'll get the JMM race series headers and race series intake system + the JMM Spark plugs and leads. From what I can gather, the cam in the EL XR6 is pretty good so would not really benefit from and mods on that yet??
As far as a chip is concerned, how much are they worth? I have been looking at the Unichip which apparently are pretty popular.
What gains could I expect and at what sort of cost. Including Unichip.....????
