New head and tonnes of smoke

I fitted a reco head to my EA 3.9L multipoint OHC i6 engine and after re-assembling it and starting for the first time, it spewed out smoke from the exhaust. The rings are fine, it doesn't really smell like oil, what could it be?

Re: New head and tonnes of smoke

have had the same problem on all the head gasket fixes i have done (totalling 3 in two years) and this problem is common on initial start-up. Take it for a good decent drive, should fix itself within no time (has on mine anyway)

Could also be burning off oil you might have spilled down exhaust? Condensation?

Re: New head and tonnes of smoke

What colour is the smoke?

White is water, blue is oil, black is over-rich.

How bad was the last gasket blown? its possible it dumped a whole lot of water in the exhaust, which would take a little bit to burn off, happened on my escort, went away after about 20mins

Re: New head and tonnes of smoke

I had shitloads of smoke too when I first started mine after reconditing my head. I put it down to oil getting in the cylinders when re-assembline it.

If the smoke hasnt gone away after a minute or two you have a serious problem.
