Thumbs down OHH CRAP! please help.

Last night i was driving my XF to my girlfriends, I get about 30 seconds away and my car starts acting up.
I get to her house and check under the bonnet, My air filter was just sitting on previously as the bolt had broken half in the carb and half out.
The half that had been stuck in the thread has disappeared. I have a bad feeling it went into my carby and/or my engine.
My car now sounds like a truck, wont rev cleanly and when i put the throttle on at the carby petrol sprays up out of a tube straight into the air or my face like last night. Not just a little petrol but heaps.
The carby is a holley 4 barrel and there is one tube on either side sticking up into the air under the air cleaner.
I left it at my girlfriends and it is getting towed home today.

Do you guys have any idea how f***ed my engine is? How can i check what is wrong.

I was going to change engines soon but didnt want to start this early.

Thanks guys.
Dan

Re: OHH CRAP! please help.

Hmmmm,

sounds lke that bolt is now in one of the bores, or on top of a valve at least.

Also if the holley is spraying direcly upwards, then the little nozzles must me missing, as the fuel spray should be directed down into the throats.
By memory there is one screw that holds the pair of nozzles in the top of the carb.
Maybe this is gone down there too?

Re: OHH CRAP! please help.

fuel spraying up from the breather tube behind the "centre squirters" can also indicate a bit of crap under the seat of the carb float shut off valve.
Tap the carb lightly on the top of the bowls and see if it stops. If there are no parts "missing" as such I'd be looking at the shutoff seat and valve

Re: OHH CRAP! please help.

Okay ive had another look in daylight.
It seems the problem is with my carby. The main big valve butterfly thing doesnt open with the throttle anymore, it is stuck open. There is a white plastic thing behind the electric choke terminal that looks like it should move with the throttle and spring back when off the throttle. It doesnt spring back anymore. If i leave it at idle it eventually slows to a stall but if i hold the main valve open its okay.
Fuel didnt spray out of the breather tube today. But the carb did backfire.

How can i make the white plastic thing spring back when the throttle is released?
Im still unsure where the bolt is but i think it destoyed the carb.Any other ideas?

Thanks Guys
Dan

Re: OHH CRAP! please help.

is it possible that the bolt is still in the carb holding the butterfly open?

I took the carby off and had a look and couldnt see anything. The main butterfly cant be operated by the throttle properly anymore, i can keep it running tho playing with the clutch and revving it a bit.
Im not sure if i will get it fixed now, I played with my mini today and changed the leads and plugs and finally got it running so the XF will be retired to the shed. I filled the mini for 10 bucks so i will be driving that for a bit while working on the XF.
Hopefully i can find a decent wrecked fairmont/ghia this week and the conversion to aftermarket EFI will begin.
If the carby is cheap to fix i will get it done and sell it seeing as i wont be needing it anymore.

Thanks guys.
