My 88 Spak oil gauge is always sitting low. Where should the needle be roughly, when the engine is at running temp, ie. where should it be when idling, and when cruising at say 100kph in a 3spd auto?
I also noticed that when I turn the ignition on, the needle swings right aross full, then when engine starts it always sits first or 2nd line, sometimes almost in the red...
I just topped up my oil so it cant be that...any ideas?

once warmed up it should sit about the same place except under acceleration where it drops abit, and except at idle where it usually drops right down.

mine sits 100% of the time not idling half way between the 2nd and 3rd line, and when idling its just on the first line.....however this is how it used to be and when i changed oils i had pressure that was above half even at idle.

you will know if you have excessive clearance or low oil pressure if your engine makes a ticking noise.

Phew, thats a relief!....
Gregorys says to use 20W 50, I assume this is correct...what brand do people here use?
Whats best for an 88 3.9MPI auto?

im currently using 20W50 marlows oil which i bought 5L of for $8.99

you are best off for an 88 EA to use penrite HPR50 extra viscosity, this is the most superior protection you can get.

Is that Penrite stuff expensive? This will be the best for my engine?

Before I rebulit my motor at operating temp the oil gauge sat at 2 bars above the read.I measured oil pressure to see how the old girl was at 200rpm and gave me a 250kpa which is exactly what it should be my the EA Bible.Once the the motor was out I chose to replace my oil pump for piece of mind and it sits in exactly the same spot and runs the same oil pressure.This is on 15/50.
