Hey guys what oil Would you recommend for a 5psd manual in my AU XR6.. and should there be any lubricants added??

I think that AU 5 speed gearbox uses automatic transmission fluid Dexron II or III but you have to put in some aditive called Lubrizol.

I''ve been around this issue time and time again. Same box in different models and the oil spec changes for no apparent reason, except I think it's more to do with Ford trying to minimise any gear lash noise or neutral rattle etc. that might disturb the precious car occupants.

Some folks think that ATF is unsuitable for manual gearboxes where the gear loads are high. But it does seem to do the job. After some thought I settled on Penrite Xtra light 75W/80 with the Lubrizol 7906 addiitve, which is required to help the synchros. work properly. And it gets changed every 50,000k.

I use Transmax. Recomened by Mal Wood who specialises in T5's and Tremec's. It seems to do the job, much sweeter shift too.

everybody says so and i've got no probs with my box after god knows how many km.

stiddy be careful what u put in it.the first time i changed the oil in mine i put some castrol 80w in it and it felt smooth as changing gears while the car was staitionary ,but as soon as i took it for a drive it just refused to change gears.1st to 2nd was a bit tight no way i could get 3rd .so i changed it back to dexron 3 and it was fine again ,except for the usual notchy 1st to 2nd change.
dose anyone know if there is an additive you can use to make changing gears a bit smoother?

I spoke to the boys up at repco about changing the oil.. they said that if you use castrol transmax z you dont need an additive.. like lubrizol.. but if you go for transmax s or penrit xtra lite you need lubrizol..

anyhow its about 63.50 bucks for the transmax z and 11.50 for the lubrizol 7906 additive..

I use Castrol Transmax Z too with no additive required and runs fine

Not badly priced either i paid about $40 for 5 litres from repco (only place that had it in stock)


Shifts soooo Smooth and its green in colour
