Hi all,
I have a 1966 falcon engine and i purchased a gear drive which I was promised would fit 200-250 c.i. falcons.

Im talking about the really old falcons with the integral cast inlet manifold, capable of putting a 250-2V head on it. Its not cross flow and its not over head cam.

I tried to fit this gear drive last night and low and behold it didnt fit. I rang the company today and they were pretty sure it should fit and suggested that there was an american block that was slightely different. However I have two of these engines and they seemed the same to me... EG Im pretty confident its an Aussie block..

It seemed like the crank was not low enough in the block and the idler gear was fowling on the crank. Eg the 200C.I. block has the crank closer to the camshaft than the 250C.I.

Does anyone know if there is a difference between 200c.i. and 250c.i. falcons except that the deck height is different? Ford wouldnt have lifted the deck height including the camshaft and then changed the cam chains would they? I didnt think so because the push rods are different between the 250 and the 200 (the 250 rods are longer)

Im going to go back into the shed tonight and scratch my head some more...

Has anyone here fitted a gear drive to their old falcon?

Any suggestions would be great. :)

Early falcons from XK to XT came fitted with the family of 144..170..200..221ci motors.

From XW on was the 200..250ci motors which was a total revamp of the earlier style, so they look the same, and some parts could be interchanged, but as you have discovered, the crankshafts are in different locations.

Hi, thanks for this input,

I realised there were heaps of different configs when I was trying to get parts..,

basically as I understand it, there must be two crank locations..

The first series has the crank higher up in the block (XK-XT) and the second lower to give a longer stroke and thus bigger capacity (XW-Onwards).

Is this correct?

Basically, I think I just need to forget the gear drive and get a timing chain :) It was a nice dream while it lasted...

Anyone want to buy a brand new gear drive to suit XW onwards? haha..

Want to know something really funny???

I just ordered a timing chain to suit my engine from a prominant timing chain manufacturer.

I ordered a 7 keyway full roller chain to suit my 200.

I get a 1 key way economy set to suit a 250, which has a chain which is to long

GRUMBLE! hahahah..

Seems like its a common misconception that the 200-250 family are completely interchangeable. I think this has to do with the heads..

Now I have a gear drive and a timing chain that dont fit. Im going to take the chain back hopefully :)
