frown Orion 16 ghia "Auto gearbox probs"

Hiya peeps...

Ok not sure if this is the right area to post but hopefully someone here can help with a little or maybe big prob i have..

Ok yesterday i brought a automatic J reg Orion 16 ghia for £20 bargain!!

the bad point is it has no drive :(
the engine runs perfect but once you try to select any gear nothing happens !!

When you select any forward gears you hear nothing at all but if you select reverse you hear what sounds to me like a really fast spinning sound?? but not a loud or bad sound just like something spinning really fast!!

The engine itself is a CVH not sure on type of box but i'm hopeing you guys may know!!

I have been told that maybe there is like a metal band that runs the box and this may have snapped???

any ideas or answers would be great...

on another note is it a simple job just to convert it to a manual box??

thanks in advance...

UK Orion '91-on is fitted with the CTX transmission, and at the price you paid for the car, the odds are the gearbox is u/s !
To confirm, the gearbox sump needs to come off for inspection (after draining the fluid), failure of the driveband will mean a load of scrap metal will come off with the sump!
Conversion to manual is possible, apart from the g/box you'll need gear linkage, clutch pedal, shaft, and/or pedal box, clutch cable, speedo cable, flywheel and clutch assy, inhibitor switch and reversing light wirings sorted out. Easiest to plunder a whole car down at the breakers.

Hi JaseBinding .
I agree with Fordtech that the tranny sounds stuffed but I would suggest that you just find a used replacement auto.

Changing an auto to manual can sometimes be more of a mission than expected and more costly than you expect too.
