I have got a couple of questions that I hope some one can answer regarding an engine rebiuild.
Firstly - I have an EL which is the EL block with and AU head, does anyone know if there is a difference in the bottom end. If so what?
I'm thinking of rebuilding an EF block at home with ACL race parts (Pistons, bearings) and having it cleaned/bored/painted. Then i'll get the head port polished new springs valves etc (it already has a stage 4 cam) and put it on the newley rebuilt engine.
Does a bottom end rebuild give much of a power increase when using these parts.
Does anyone have any info on rebuilding the bottom end- thanks

I'm not sure if you'll get much of an increase in power from doing your bottom end work. To give you an example, before my supercharged AU was rebuilt (motor was stuffed and oil catch can filling up after only a short drive) my car put out 279hp@wheels and after the full rebuild it put out 286hp@wheels (although this was after the new motor had only done 1,000km or so).
they have larger mains i think... so u will have to make sure u get the right bearings.. all i would do is deck it to 0 deck height, use standard pistons, new rings... au head gasket, get ya head mildly ported not that its realy needed... and away ya go.. bigest problem with getting the compresson up in these motors is the hudge chambers in the heads... or u could get a set of wiesco pistons made up with lumpy tops and fly cuts to get ya compression up in the world...
not worth the effort going bigger in bore u wont gain anything

correct .. mains are bigger
also this is a little controversial:
the AU has a 4 bolt main
and or a griddle
as for boring .. dont bother
power gain from bottom end you will not see unless you increase the comprression ratio via a) using dome top pistons ore deck teh head and block, however double check valve clearance when u do it.
Can you not fit an earlier model sump to an AU, and if not, how do you go for fitment into an earlier model crossmember subframe assembly? does the alloy sump foul on anything?
